I really can't decide...KOTOR II followed the basic structure of KOTOR I, but had a story that seemed to be larger and really enables it for another game to occur. In truth, KOTOR II is really just a basic upgrade to the original in terms of technical aspects, with a new story.
Both stories are different, but I didn't find one better than the other. They're both good. Overall, I'd call them even because I really can't decide on which one was "better". Play both in order and you'll enjoy them so much more.

KOTOR 2, by a hair, because of some of the philosophical questions it raises, and a very, very powerful ending.

Actually, I think I preferred KOTOR 1 over KOTOR 2, by just a little bit. In general, I thought KOTOR 2 was better technically, in terms of its graphics and the general playability of the game. But I thought KOTOR 1's story was much more involving and imerssive. Yes, KOTOR 2's ending lends itself easily to another game, but I had trouble believing that KOTOR 2 had ended. It felt somewhat...imcomplete.
Don't get me wrong, I really liked both games. But if I had to choose, I'd choose KOTOR 1.

Don't be cheap. Get them both.
KOTOR 2 has a lot of references to KOTOR 1 in it, and unless you play them both you won't get a lot of it. This is not to say KOTOR 2 can't be a stand-alone game, but why rob yourself of some in-depth knowledge?
KOTOR 1 is only $15-20, and if you take your time with it you'll be able to get KOTOR 2 for $20 when you're done.

he's probably refering to US$ but it won't be too much different. im canadian and its only a few dollars more so aussie won't be much different.
Probably can find the game at Wal-mart, err if Aussie has a wal-mart. worst comes to worst order online.

The amounts I speak of are always USD. I never but things outside of my own country.
Does that technology tax apply to game slike it did/does to hardware? If so you're looking at a lot more than that
It seems that KOTOR 2 is a tad more expensive for the AUD buyer than the USD buyer. I paid about $40 for it, which is $51 AUD. On a site that says it's going out of business it's listed for $66 AUD, which - oddly enough - is $51 USD.

Its a fairly new game so its probably about $70-80 at places like EB or The Games Wizard.
And in response to Wal-Mart, i think that Big W, Target and Kmart would be similar

Buy KOTOR1 first.
Its pointless to play KOTOR2 without playing KOTOR1 as parts of it won't make any sense and it will destroy the story of KOTOR1 when you finally do play it.
They both use exactly the same engine though, so it really makes no difference, the only thing you're looking at is the story, and both stories are equally good. It would be hard to properly enjoy KOTOR2 without playing KOTOR1 which is why I'd strongly recommend playing KOTOR1 first. The only gameplay advantage KOTOR2 has is the addition of an extra half dozen Force Powers or so, but you don't miss them in KOTOR1, and for the most part you'll only use the main ones from KOTOR1 even in KOTOR2.
So... my vote is KOTOR1. KOTOR2 is kind of like ESB, its a good game, but it isn't much of a stand alone in the same way you wouldn't experience SW the same way by watching ESB before ANH (it'd kinda spoil it to learn that Darth Vader is Luke's father straight away).

I have to agree, KOTOR1 but just by a little. KOTOR2 just dosen't have a whole lot of uniqueness to it. I suggest getting both, as the one builds upon the other.

I would say KOTOR 2 was the greater of the two. The feel of the game to me, was not as static and stoic as it's predecessor. It felt... Looser, if that makes any sense at all.

. The character were real in KOTOR. (Or at least in regard to KOTOR 1) The vast array of extras were rewarding as well; Dark side/ Light side transitioned were acknowledged by your party, linguistics were kicked up a few notches, respect of your party members, battle systems, augmentations, etc. KOTOR 2 hands down

Both stories were short, took me only 10 hours on average to beat them, but i would have to say KOTOR II, it lets you interact more, can't wait to see if there is going to be a KOTOR III

Seriously. That's a mongo pet peeve of mine; let's say..... Star Wars Episode III arrives, and someone sees it, but he/she has not seen any of the others. Can you say ARG!?
Anyway, who here thinks Lucas has wielded the "Torn, shattered, yet still strikingly badass," persona for to many of his villans?

well it depends really, kotor 2 does follow kotor 1 in a sense, but lots of things are left unsaid in the end of kotor 1. like what happens to revan, (yes u can find out on korriban hint hint!!). and the end of kotor 2 SUCKED I mean wtf they leave with a lame ass ending and you don't know what happens next. but there are good things of kotor 2, like there is a good array of characters depending on gender and aligment. and there was a far greater array of upgrades for ur meelle and ranged wepons. but no custom hilts. also a great gameplay with many quests that will leave u playing for a long time. not that kotor 1 was not a great game 40 GAME OF THE YEAR AWARDS says alot about the game there i am going to go into detail about the greatness of kotor 1. but u get my picture they are both really great and exelent games. i suggest going to eb games or gamestop and getting them both. u can get kotor 1 new for under 20 platium hit. and kotor 2 new from anywhere starting at 30 to 50 dollars U.S. just get both games.

if the question is 'Which is the better game?' then the answer's KOTOR 2. It's much more involved, the items are better, the making of items and weapons, the fact that the characters available can change, depending on certain choices in the game, plus the influence system.
If the question is 'which did you enjoy more?' then KOTOR 1. the story was much more involving, i found. the NPCs were also much stronger characters. i also found HK-47 to be funnier in the first one. is it just me, or is HK the greatest droid in the star wars universe? i want one...

From what I've heard, they're setting it up as a trilogy a lot like the Original Trilogy of films. For example- the end of Empire Strikes Back was probably the most depressing Star Wars ending. However- it fitted the content of that film. Plus, it set things up nicely for a big finale in Return of the Jedi.
So... I believe they're planning a big finale with KOTOR 3, which I'm sure will blow all of the others out of the water.

KOTOR III is quite possibly gonna be the greatest thing ever to happen to single player RPGs. I just hope there's more room for individuality with the player character.

KOTOR II was a great game with some far more interesting and deep characters then in KOTOR, althought the story in KOTOR was much better, KOTOR II got quite confusing at certain points in the game and the ending was rushed.

wow...I just tipped the scales in favore of the orgional...WEE!!
KOTOR 1 had better plot and introduced the charecter interaction theme...
KOTOR 2 had an...ok, plot, and was really deep as far as charecter interaction.
I really hate to choose between these two AWESOME games, but I feel my loyalty say in the direction of my first love.
Sorry #2.
I Like KOTOR 2 because of the character interaction and the plot, and it just felt uh..."Darker" than the first one..didnt like the ending that much though.

I do like the fact there does to seem to be a easier time with items in KOTOR I but having more contol over the power of your lightsaber in KOTOR II is great even though there is no where near as many available I think I've had six sabers at the most in KOTOR II at once

If there ends up being a KotOR III I agree that it will be one of the greatest games of all time. Just seeing the advancements between the first two, you can only imagine what they'll do in a third one.
Aside from the fact that it had glitches out the ass and was about as chopped up as badly butchered meat, KotOR 2 was better. The characters had more personality, the story had, unlike KotOR, political undertones, active romances, consequences to your actions, a compelling mystery, and even three trippy droid characters.
Plus all the Jedi die in it. Mmmm, carnage and mayhem...
