There's a wiki article for a project Jac and I have been talking about for a while - the DJB Open Source Initiative.

I'd like people to look it over, check out/evaluate the software and let us know what's worth putting up there to recommend.

I'd definitely suggest adding Firefox (Browser) & Gaim (Multi-Platform, Multi-Protocol IM Client)

I already downloaded them and working on that and right now before I do anything I'm impressed with open office my master suggested using that a while back and I think it's much better than word.

For IM, I don't know if Trillian is Open Source? If it is, I recommend that. It incorporates IRC, AIM, YIM, MSN, and ICQ.

by the way - the Open Source Initiative wiki article should be linked on the main site (on all layouts).

LOL what is open source

As far as I know open source means non-classified intelligence information (like broadcasts on CNN are considered open source information).

What does it mean to code-monkey types ? >.<

Yes it is. :P

mIRC isn't. It's a Windows-only IRC client. There's other IRC clients as well. :P

IRC is a protocol which provides a set of rules for dealing with chatting, channels, privmsgs etc. It is by nature 'free' because it is just a spec. If you want to, you can start up telnet, connect to an IRC server and pretend to be an IRC client yourself (not that I'd recommend doing that...).

mIRC is a program for Windows which implements the IRC protocol, for which you have to pay. There are other clients out there that connect to IRC which are free. X-Chat (Windows version for free here, Mac version with native interface here) is pretty decent cilent once you get used to it. And open source at that, so it belongs in this thread.

I will cause I can...unlike others...

anyway, open source is a good way to inspire more activity in higher ranks, such as magistrate and preator spots.

most people wont apply for it because they dont have the required programs.

OpenOffice > MS Office. Sure, it doesn't have all of MS Office's fancy features, but it's free and I never use the fancy features anyway.

Edit: Okay, maybe I should actually read the wiki article before posting. Consider this post, then, to be an encouragement and announcement to all: GO GET OPENOFFICE! :D
